The park was initiated by Sam Brashear in 1899. Eighty thousand square feet of land was set aside to establish the park. The park recreated the Victorian style with walking trails past old mills and rustic bridges over rushing rivers. The grounds also housed a 52-year-old old school building.

By the 1950s, the look of Houston had changed dramatically, with industrial progress requiring the replacement of old buildings from past eras with new ones that met the demands of modern life. The attempt to get rid of the old Sam Park buildings, which were hundreds of years old at the time, led to the activation of the park advocacy group, formed in 1954. The group's efforts were successful and subsequently led to the formation of the Houston Historic Preservation Society.

As a result of the Community's work, Sam Park has preserved many valuable historic structures, conscientiously preserved to this day. Buildings include pre-revolutionary Texas buildings, a 1981 church built by German and Swedish immigrants, and a 1905 mansion with all the attributes of the time.

Sam Park's historic legacy reveals the diversity of life from liberated slaves building their homes to the families of wealthy merchants. A trip through the park will be a fascinating and memorable experience and is sure to enrich your knowledge of the history and culture of the great state of Texas!
