Alcatraz Island and Prison is an island in San Francisco Bay, California. The island was originally used as a military fortress, which was later converted into a prison. It became famous because of the high-profile names of its prisoners. George Kelly, Robert Stroud, Henry Young and Al Capone were imprisoned here at various times. Criminals who could not be held within the walls of other prisons were also held here. But no one managed to escape safely from Alcatraz (there were 14 escape attempts in all). The fact is that the prison is located in the center of the bay and it can be reached only by water. The water temperature of the bay is not high and the currents are very strong, so that even an excellent swimmer will not be able to overcome a little more than 2 kilometers to San Francisco. When Alcatraz opened to the public in 1972 it became a famous historical site visited by a huge number of tourists and is considered one of the most visited places in San Francisco.
