Meatpacking District - tour

  Bohemian Meatpacking owes its name to meatpacking distribution companies. Although there are still meatpacking businesses here, the Meatpacking District has in the last few years become the center of New York City's fashionable club and restaurant scene, where fashion magazines from around the world hold fashion shoots. It owes this to its location between bohemian SoHo, Chelsea and Green Village, in the center of coffee-literary and gallery-club culture. Aside from its small, free-standing boutiques of the most prestigious brands, high-end hotels and fine restaurants, the neighborhood boasts landscaped parks like Highline Park, built on a former subway line. After trains stopped running here in the 1980s, New York-based design firm Corner Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro. did their best to transform the crumbling landscape into a green meadow. The park spans nine city blocks.
