The first copper discovery occurred in 1899, although the mines were not in full production until the completion of the railroad to the mine in 1911. Kennecott prospered until 1938, when high-quality copper veins were exhausted, after which it became a ghost town. Today Kennecott is considered the best example of the early 20th century copper industry. Park Visitor Centers: The park is open year-round Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (mile 106 of Richardson Highway between Glennallen and Copper Center). Chitina is open May 30 through the first Monday in September, mile 33 of "Edgerton Highway" Slana Ranger Station is open year-round, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in summer and by appointment in winter, (mile 0.2 of "Nabesna Road"). Kennecott - Historic Landmark - Station Building is open May 30 through the first Monday in September, 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. daily. Approximately 57200 people visit the park each year and admission is free.
