Of the many restaurants located on the pier, the Forbes Island floating restaurant is the most notable, but you can also sample sweets, ice cream, and fruit from the many street vendors. But the most interesting feature of the pier is the rookery of harbor seals, located near the end of the pier. Here they quietly live their lives and do not pay attention to tourists. For these animals made special wooden planking. On the skins of many animals there are traces of shark's teeth.
California harbor seals have always inhabited San Francisco Bay, but on Pier 39 they first appeared in September 1989. Although the reasons for the migration remained unclear, the pier was reconstructed and everything possible was done to allow the animals to roam freely and feel safe. By the end of 1989 more than a dozen sea lions had settled on the pier. When in 1990 the number of animals exceeded 150, the owners of yachts began to complain about the smell and noise, besides there was a real danger of collision with these rather large animals. But the factor of tourists, attracted by the lions, outweighed and the mooring of the yachts was moved to another place. The number of sea animals living on the pier is constantly changing. In search of food sea lions periodically leave the pier, but invariably return, usually in the spring. Scientists estimate that a total of about 1500 animals settled in the rookeries of Pier 39. Sea lions are an ornament of this wonderful pier and are madly popular with tourists.
Right at the entrance to the pier is the Aquarium of the Bay. The Aquarium is an exhibition center where you can get acquainted with the underwater world of San Francisco.
The Aquarium has three parts. In the first part you can get acquainted with the fauna of the Bay. The second part is the biggest and is made as a glass tunnel of more than 90 meters long. The tunnel is surrounded by 3 million liters of water, where there are 20,000 marine animals. Through the glass you can see shoals of fish, unusual jellyfish, sharks and other representatives of the bay. In the second tunnel you can explore the deep sea world and see incredible animals. In the final section of the Aquarium, you can even touch individual sea creatures, such as a stingray, starfish, or leopard shark.
