George Washington Memorial - tour

  The George Washington Memorial is the centerpiece of the National Mall and one of the city's most famous monuments. On top of the 169-meter stele, symbolizing the resilience of the first American president, is an observation deck. From there you have a great view of the American capital, including the White House, the Lincoln Memorial (opened in honor of Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States), the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (built in memory of Vietnam War victims) and the Jefferson Memorial (dedicated to Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States). Between the Washington Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial is Mirror Pond. This 2,000-foot-long, 160-foot-wide pond contains 7 million gallons of water. It was created in the likeness of the reservoirs at Versailles and the Taj Mahal. The design of the pond minimizes swell on the surface of the water and increases the sharpness of the monument's water reflection.
