Pentagon - tour

  The Pentagon (the Department of Defense building) is the only ministerial building across the Potomac River from the Mall. It simply could not be built on the Mall because of the unique architectural design and scale of its construction. The Pentagon building is the largest structure in the world in terms of floor area. Architecturally, it is five pentagons, built into each other and connected by passages. To enter the U.S. Department of Defense building, the Pentagon, you only need to show your passport - and you will be let through the metal detector gate. In recent years the "secret facility" receives up to one hundred thousand tourists annually. Smart cadets lead tours around the building. The walls are hung with photos. A favorite subject is the American soldier helping civilians in an eastern country. A "tour" of the Pentagon usually ends with a visit to the memorial to the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. It is located on the very spot where the Boeing 757 crashed into the building. The memorial is modest - a black marble slab with the names of the victims. The building has a courtyard that houses a grocery store that serves the department's employees. According to a local legend, during the Cold War, Soviet military analysts supposed there was a bunker under this small building: spy satellites recorded large numbers of people going in and out of it all the time. In connection with this, Soviet nuclear missiles were allegedly aimed right at the grocery store. It is forbidden to take pictures during the excursion.
